The Dust of Your Rabbi

In the first century, there was a Jewish blessing that captured the heartbeat of discipleship:
“May you always be covered by the dust of your rabbi.”

The picture is vivid: may you follow your rabbi so closely that the dust kicked up from his sandals clings to your clothes and smudges your face. It was less about learning information and more about living in proximity. To be “dust-covered” was to say, I’m staying close. I’m not missing a step. I want every part of his life to rub off on mine.

What mattered most wasn’t what the rabbi was doing—teaching, eating, walking, working—it was simply being with him. Every ordinary moment became a classroom, every interaction a lesson.

In those days, disciples didn’t just show up for lectures. They followed their rabbi everywhere—watching how he handled money, how he responded to conflict, how he treated strangers. They wanted to know his opinions, his habits, even his prayers. They competed for the chance to sit at his table, share his chores, or walk beside him on the road. Nothing was too mundane, because in every moment the rabbi was showing them how to live.

That ancient blessing points us to the heart of what it means to follow Jesus. Discipleship isn’t primarily about checking boxes, memorizing verses, or attending events. It’s about proximity. It’s about living close enough to Jesus that His grace, wisdom, and way of life start to cling to us—like dust on our clothes.

So the question for us is simple: Are we walking closely enough with our Rabbi that His dust covers our lives?

Three Ways to Walk in the Dust of Jesus

  1. Start Your Day in His Presence
Before the noise of the world begins, carve out even ten quiet minutes to read His Word, pray, or sit in silence. Let His voice set the pace for your day.
  2. Invite Him Into the Ordinary
Don’t just meet Jesus in “sacred spaces.” Ask Him to shape how you respond to email, how you spend money, how you speak to coworkers or family. Every moment is a discipleship moment.
  3. Walk with Dusty Friends
Discipleship is easier together. Surround yourself with people who are also chasing after Jesus. Their closeness to Him will encourage yours.
