Time
"There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace. What does the worker gain from his toil? I have seen the burden God has laid on men. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men, yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end."
This passage of scripture (Ecclesiastes 3) sets time against eternity. It describes the highs and lows of this life that are caught up in this transient thing we call time. Within this life, there will be times of joy and sadness, delight and despair, peaks and valleys, highs, and lows. That's part of the package of being human... our life is made up of various experiences caught up in a series of times.
But at the end of these familiar words, we are introduced to a theme above and beyond the limitations of time – Eternity. God has set this desire and yearning for eternity into our hearts. As we seek to understand what eternity looks like, we are presented with a picture where the inconsistency of this world is replaced with the stability of a place where there is no more suffering, no more pain, and no more of the 'lows' that exist in this realm that is defined by time.
The hope of heaven should encourage us to live confidently and with great gratitude through the various high and low times that we experience during our time on earth.
However, the good news does not end with the invitation and promise of heaven when our time comes to an end. The invitation of Jesus is to begin our eternal life now….to bring the power and peace of heaven into our current times! As we strive to follow the One who entered into time, yet lives in eternity, Jesus, we are invited to bring 'up there, down here.'
How can you do that today? Begin living eternally
